THE WALL WATCHERS drag me into an interrogation room and force me to my knees. They attach short chains to my cuffs that are bolted into the concrete floor, restraining me like Iâm some sort of dog. After they leave I lose track of time, the sound of the ticking clock on the wall behind me the only distraction from my agony. I donât know how long I stay motionless in the windowless room, but itâs long enough that my legs and shoulders cramp and my knees scream from the unyielding pressure.
The door behind me opens on squeaky hinges. I donât turn my head to look, not wanting to give them the satisfaction of my curiosity.
âLeave us.â
Fuck. Me.
I would know his voice anywhere. I yank at the heavy chains and I donât have enough play in them to even stand. Iâm on my knees like a recalcitrant slave and completely at his mercy. Considering he has none, I know right now, I am well and truly fucked.
âMr. Byrne, so nice to see you again,â Ryan Gregory states with a voice redolent of anything but pleasure. âMay I call you Declan? After all, my future wife calls you by your given name. I feel I should be afforded the same courtesy, donât you?â
What do I win for guessing correctly, Alex?
Judging by the crazy game show thoughts going through my head, Iâve either had my brains scrambled from the beating or Iâve finally lost my mind. Either way, Iâ m not going to say a word until I figure out exactly what he knows. My jaw aches from the pressure of keeping my trap shut, the snarky comments and nasty quips that come so easily banging against the back of my teeth. It takes all my effort to not let them loose, the Herculean undertaking at least taking my mind off the stabbing pain in my knees and the itch of oozing blood as it trails down my bare back.
âSo, you arenât going to speak to me?â He tsks at me like Iâve been a naughty schoolboy. âThatâs very rude of you. I thought maybe we could get to know each other a little better. After all, your mother and I were, how should I put it? Very well acquainted.â
I know better than to take the bait. I clench my jaw so tightly my teeth vibrate. Ryan paces behind me, my unwillingness to engage pissing him off. He turns to face me but I still refuse to look at him. I donât need to see his face to picture his sanctimonious sneer just as I doubt he needs to look in my eyes to see my unchecked loathing.
As much as I hate to admit it, Ryan Gregory and I have one thing in common; weâre both cold-blooded predators. I am well aware there is something seriously mentally wrong with both of us. I canât say what his damage is for sure, but I suspect he was born with a screw loose. To be the monster he is, he must have been born without a soul.
